The premise of this sleep method is simple—everyone has their own blanket or duvet to avoid disruption from their bed partner.

In Australia, most of us make our beds with a fitted sheet on the base. We then add a flat sheet, blanket and duvet cover or bedspread. In Europe, the fitted sheet is obsolete – that is, they don’t use them as we typically do here in Australia.

With this in mind, the Scandinavian Sleep Method would see you make your bed with your fitted sheet and then two separate duvets or blankets – one for each occupant of the bed.

This method requires that each person in the bed has their own individual blanket rather than two people sharing one blanket. This way, there is no tangled mess during the night, so both people can remain comfortable throughout their slumber.

Pros:

  • Unless your partner tosses and turns like they’re on a trampoline, there should be much less disturbance to your sleep. Entering and exiting the bed will have less disruption to both of you.
  • You might get hot at night whereby your partner feels the cold. This way you can each choose your level of warmth and weight.
  • If one of you are sick, it’s easy to remove just one blanket to wash rather than needing to get up to strip the whole bed.
  • Knowing you have the blanket all to yourself, allows you to relax more as well as make you feel safe and secure.

Cons:

  • Initially it is an additional expense to purchase another duvet or matching blanket.  Often it’s better value for money when you buy just one large cover rather than two smaller ones.
  • More covers means more washing.
  • You or your partner might feel it creates a wall or separation from each other.
  • Making the bed takes a bit of getting used to in order to minimise it looking split down the middle.

How to Style Your Bed Using the Scandinavian Sleep Method

You’re probably thinking that your bed will look a little odd having an obvious separation of blankets splitting it straight down the middle.

Our tip is to use matching blankets or duvet covers and have them overlap in the centre. Unify your bed by including a beautiful throw that goes across the bottom of the entire bed. You could also disguise the middle joinery by placing your throw in the centre. Tuck it into the bottom and to the top of the bed (see picture). Lastly, decorate your bed with plenty of coordinating cushions or pillows.
