What is the Scandinavian Sleep Method?

Are you someone who has trouble sleeping? Do you toss and turn, unable to get comfortable and drift off into sleep? If so, you may want to consider the Scandinavian Sleep Method. This method has been practiced in Scandinavia for centuries and revolves around the idea that everyone needs their own blanket or duvet. Let’s dive a bit deeper into why this is true and how this sleep method can help you have better nights.

How the Scandinavian Sleep Method works:

The premise of this sleep method is simple—everyone has their own blanket or duvet to avoid disruption from their bed partner.

In Australia, most of us make our beds with a fitted sheet on the base. We then add a flat sheet, blanket and duvet cover or bedspread. In Europe, the fitted sheet is obsolete – that is, they don’t use them as we typically do here in Australia.

With this in mind, the Scandinavian Sleep Method would see you make your bed with your fitted sheet and then two separate duvets or blankets – one for each occupant of the bed.

This method requires that each person in the bed has their own individual blanket rather than two people sharing one blanket. This way, there is no tangled mess during the night, so both people can remain comfortable throughout their slumber.

By being wrapped up in your own space will provide more comfort so that you can drift off to sleep faster and stay asleep longer.

In addition, this encourages each person to adjust their own blanket as necessary so they can stay warm without overheating.

Note:  Industry trends are showing that in Australia more and more people are opting to omit the flat sheet (top sheet) from their bed. If you prefer to still have one whilst testing out the Scandinavian Sleep Method, you would need to have one each.

The Benefits of Having Your Own Blanket

Using individual blankets while sleeping has numerous benefits including:-

  1. Improved comfort
  2. Better temperature regulation, and;
  3. Enhanced feelings of security
  • With individual blankets, you won’t have to worry about your partner stealing all of the covers!
  • You can avoid waking up sweaty due to being covered by too many covers.
  • If your partner goes to bed later than you, often the smallest tug of the blanket is enough to wake you up.
  • You won’t have any issues with blankets slipping off during the night or tangling around your feet as you move around.
  • Having separate blankets allows each person to use different weight fabrics if desired; some may prefer a heavier fabric while others may prefer something light and airy.

Having your own blanket provides several benefits both mental and physical health benefits.

  • It helps reduce anxiety because there is less potential for disruption during sleep.
  • When everyone has their own space, it reduces noise as well as movement throughout the night. This can keep someone awake for hours on end trying to fall back asleep after being woken up multiple times.
  • Having your own space also helps maintain an individual’s sense of privacy even when spending time with someone else in bed.
  • Having your own blankets eliminates any possible feelings of discomfort due to temperature differences when sharing a single blanket.

The Pros & Cons of the Scandinavian Sleep Method

Having an undisturbed night’s sleep sounds great, but like everything, there’s always pros and cons.

  • Unless your partner tosses and turns like they’re on a trampoline, there should be much less disturbance to your sleep. Entering and exiting the bed will have less disruption to both of you.
  • You might get hot at night whereby your partner feels the cold. This way you can each choose your level of warmth and weight.
  • If one of you are sick, it’s easy to remove just one blanket to wash rather than needing to get up to strip the whole bed.
  • Knowing you have the blanket all to yourself, allows you to relax more as well as make you feel safe and secure.

  • Initially it is an additional expense to purchase another duvet or matching blanket.  Often it’s better value for money when you buy just one large cover rather than two smaller ones.
  • More covers means more washing.
  • You or your partner might feel it creates a wall or separation from each other.
  • Making the bed takes a bit of getting used to in order to minimise it looking split down the middle.

How to Style Your Bed Using the Scandinavian Sleep Method

You’re probably thinking that your bed will look a little odd having an obvious separation of blankets splitting it straight down the middle.

Our tip is to use matching blankets or duvet covers and have them overlap in the centre. Unify your bed by including a beautiful throw that goes across the bottom of the entire bed. You could also disguise the middle joinery by placing your throw in the centre. Tuck it into the bottom and to the top of the bed (see picture). Lastly, decorate your bed with plenty of coordinating cushions or pillows.
