Benefits of DIY Christmas decorations

Decorating your home for Christmas can be a fun and rewarding experience, and opting for DIY decor adds an extra element of personalisation. Not only will you create unique pieces that reflect your style and personality, but you’ll also save money compared to store-bought decorations. DIY Christmas decor allows you to unleash your creativity and bring your own vision to life. Plus, it’s a great way to involve family and friends in the holiday spirit.

Popular DIY Christmas styling trends

Before diving into the specific DIY ideas, let’s take a look at some of the popular styling trends in Christmas decor this year. Natural elements are proving to be popular year after year, with pinecones, twigs and greenery being used to create rustic and cozy vibes. Metallic accents, such as gold and silver, are also popular for adding a touch of glamour to your decor. Another trend is incorporating personalised touches, such as monogrammed ornaments or custom-made stockings.

Budget-friendly DIY Christmas decor ideas

If you’re on a tight budget, like most of us are these days, these Christmas styling ideas are perfect! There are plenty of DIY ideas that won’t break the bank. One idea is to repurpose items you already have, such as mason jars or wine bottles and turn them into festive candle holders. You can also create a stunning centrepiece by gathering pinecones, berries and branches from your backyard and arranging them in a vase or basket. Another budget-friendly option is to make paper snowflakes and string them together to create a whimsical garland.

DIY Christmas wreath ideas

Transform your front door into a welcoming sight with a DIY Christmas wreath. One idea is to use a foam wreath base and attach pinecones, berries and ribbon to create a natural and rustic look. If you prefer a more glamorous wreath, consider using ornaments in various sizes and colours. You can also add a personal touch by incorporating small photo frames with pictures of your loved ones.

If you’re a skilled craftsperson you could make a very unique crotchet wreath that would be endlessly admired by your visitors.

DIY Christmas table & centrepiece ideas

A beautifully decorated table is essential for a festive holiday gathering. Create a stunning centrepiece by filling a glass bowl with ornaments in different sizes and colours. To add a touch of elegance, place a few sprigs of fresh greenery or faux snow on top.

Another idea is to arrange candles of varying heights on a silver tray and surround them with pinecones and holly berries.

For a more minimalist look, fill a wooden tray with small glass vases and place single stems of red berries or white flowers in each vase.

Another DIY Christmas decorating idea is to use what you have in your garden. Australian Christmas Bush is beautiful and I’m lucky to have our lovely neighbours next door who always give me a bunch each year. You can put this in a tall vase and strategically wrap some fairy lights around the bottom. Another idea is to take sprigs of it and insert it amongst your cutlery & serviette bundles.  Any greenery will look great and it gives your table a very fresh style.

DIY Christmas Tree Ornament ideas

Get creative with your tree decorations by making your own ornaments. One idea is to repurpose old Christmas cards by cutting out festive shapes and adding a ribbon for hanging. Another option is to use leftover wrapping paper to create origami ornaments. You can also personalise clear glass ornaments by filling them with glitter, feathers or small trinkets. For a sentimental touch, consider making salt dough ornaments with your children’s handprints.

Creative DIY Christmas tree

If you’re short on space or simply want to try something different this year, consider a creative DIY Christmas tree alternative. One idea is to create a wall-mounted tree using string lights or washi tape in the shape of a tree. You can also make a ladder tree by arranging different-sized wooden ladders and decorating them with lights and ornaments.

Another option is to create a tree-shaped bookshelf by stacking books in a pyramid shape and adding lights and small decorations. This homemade Christmas tree below is simple and joyful using branches and colourful pom poms. Remember to use double sided tape that easily removes from your wall – you don’t want to leave marks or tears behind when it’s time to take it down.

DIY Christmas outdoor decoration ideas

Spread the holiday cheer to the outside of your home with DIY outdoor decor. Create a warm and inviting atmosphere by wrapping your front porch columns with garlands and lights. Make a statement with a DIY wooden sign that says “Merry Christmas” or “‘Tis the Season.” You can also create a magical pathway by lining your walkway with luminaries made from mason jars and tea lights. Don’t forget to hang a wreath on your front door to welcome your guests.

Homemade Christmas Cookies

One of my favourite things to do in the lead up before Christmas is to bake. Our boys LOVE my Christmas gingerbread cookies and you’re only limited by your imagination on how you decorate them. One of the most popular designs I do is using the cookie man cutter upside down to create a reindeer. I think this is because you get a bonus red M&M as Rudolph’s nose! Another Christmas cookie recipe that is simple, yet has an amazing visual effect, is the Stained Glass Window Cookies. You can punch a hole in the top of these prior to cooking and thread some ribbon or twine through so you can hang it on your Christmas tree. They’re still edible after you’ve packed the tree up, unless they magically “disappear” leading up to Christmas day. Sometimes the temptation is just too much!
