Can’t sleep? There’s a phobia for that.

Can’t sleep?  Anyone knows that going without sleep is incredibly taxing on your mental and physical health. There is still plenty to learn about why we sometimes can’t sleep at night and what measures we can take to alleviate the causes.

Most of us can’t imagine not being able to fall asleep but for some it is a very real struggle.  The first two are actual phobias and if you think you are suffering from one of these, please go and see your GP (general practitioner, aka – your doctor). The 3rd and 4th ones can be managed with the right help and again your best source to get started on it would be your GP.

So here are 4 common sleep phobias / disorders that can cause havoc on your mental and physical health:-

  1. Somniphobia, or the fear of sleep, is a relatively rare condition that can cause a great deal of anxiety and distress. People with somniphobia may be afraid of falling asleep, or they may simply dread the act of sleeping itself. Somniphobia can be triggered by a fear of sleep paralysis or night terrors, or it may be rooted in a more general anxiety about losing control.
  2. Oneirophobia, or the fear of dreams, is another sleep-related phobia that can cause difficulty sleeping. People with oneirophobia may be afraid of having nightmares, or they may simply find dreams to be unsettling.
  3. Clinomania, or the excessive desire to sleep, is another condition that can impact sleep quality. People with clinomania may find it difficult to stay awake during the day, and they may end up sleeping for excessive periods of time.
  4. Dysania, or the difficulty of getting out of bed in the morning, is another condition that can make it hard to get a good night’s sleep. People with dysania often find it physically and mentally difficult to get out of bed in the morning, which can make it hard to start the day. As a result, all of these conditions can have a significant impact on sleep quality.
